Zack Hayes was drafted in the ninth round of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft by the Raiders. He signed his WHL Standard Player Agreement with the club on January 28, 2016.
The Calgary, AB product played in 272 career games in the WHL, all of which were with the Raiders. In his career, Hayes netted 15 goals and picked up 64 assists. He finished with a remarkable plus-97 rating and 322 penalty minutes. In the WHL Playoffs, he suited up in 30 games, scoring once and adding four assists. During last year’s run to the 2019 Rogers WHL Championship Series, Hayes had a goal and two assists in 23 games as the Raiders lifted the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
After wearing a letter during the 2018-19 year, Hayes was named the Raiders’ 43rd captain in franchise history on October 15, 2019. In his final year in the WHL, Hayes scored a career best seven goals and added 16 assists. He was tied atop the team with a plus-37 rating and incurred just 68 penalty minutes – the fewest in a season for his WHL career.
This year, Hayes was named the co-recipient of the Raiders’ Jim Neilson Award as Most Valuable Defenceman Presented By North Star Signs. Previously, Hayes was named the Ches Lead Award as Most Improved Player for 2016-17 and the Lionel Diehl Memorial Award as Hardest Working Player in 2018-19.
