Raiders Defeat Giants in Shootout

Prince Albert, SK – Ian Scott turned aside all three attempts in the shootout to earn his first Western Hockey League win in a 5-4 decision for the Prince Albert Raiders over the Vancouver Giants on Friday evening at the Art Hauser Centre.

Ranked in the CHL Top 10, the Giants took a 2-0 lead out of the first period before facing a barrage of Raider attempts in the middle frame. Prince Albert fired 21 second period shots and cut the deficit to one going into the final period. In the third, the Raiders took the lead but could not hold onto it as the Giants forced overtime in the final minute. Reid Gardiner scored the only goal of the shootout with the Raiders’ first shot, while Scott made saves on Carter Popoff, Jackson Houck and Radovan Bondra to secure a victory in his first WHL start.

Along with the shootout winner, Gardiner scored a goal and added one assist for two points. Sean Montgomery, Simon Stransky and Luke Coleman also found the back of the net for the Raiders.

Spy Hill, SK native Dakota Odgers picked up two points (1g-1a) for the visitors. Vancouver’s other goals came off the sticks of Houck, Jesse Roach, and Alec Baer.

Scott made 29 saves on 33 shots for the Raiders, while the Giants’ netminder Payton Lee denied 32 of 36 shots.

The Raiders outshot the Giants 37-33. Prince Albert went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Vancouver was 0-for-3.

Prince Albert notches their second win in a row past regulation and boosts their record to 2-1-0-0. The loss tonight was the first of the year for Vancouver, who now sits at 2-0-0-1.

The Prince Albert Raiders are back in action tomorrow night as they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers to the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is 7:00 PM. As part of Giant Tiger Weekend, fans can receive a free child ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket. Prince Albert concludes their home stand on Tuesday, October 6 when they take on the Kootenay Ice.
