Raiders Acquire Big, European D-Man Stefan Warg

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired 19 year-old import defenceman Stefan Warg (pronounced Ste-fan Var-g) from the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Western Hockey League trading deadline.  In return the Raiders are sending 16 year-old defenceman Austin Frank and a 5th round selection in the 2010 Bantam Draft to the T-Birds.

     Warg, 6’3”, 215 pounds, was a 5th round selection of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.  Warg, who is from Stockholm, Sweden, is in his 2nd season with Seattle.  He has played in 37 games this season with 13 assists and 53 minutes in penalties.

     Warg attended the NHL Training camp of the Ducks this fall and appeared in some NHL pre-season action.  In the 08-09 WHL campaign, Warg was paired for most of the season with Thomas Hickey in Seattle.

     “We are very excited to add Stefan Warg,” said Bruno Campese, Raiders Head Coach and General Manager.  “He is a solid, reliable d-man who adds size and composure to our defensive corps.”

     Warg is expected in PA late Monday.

     Frank was the Raiders 5th round selection in the 2008 Bantam Draft.  He is currently playing with the Calgary Buffaloes in the Alberta Major Midget Hockey League.

     This is the second trade within a week between the Raiders and Thunderbirds.   Wednesday the Raiders acquired forward Jonathan Parker from the T-Birds in exchange for Ryan Aasman.
