Raiders Pick 13 Players in 2022 WHL Prospects Draft

The Prince Albert Raiders selected 13 players in Thursday’s 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Raiders picked eight forwards, four defencemen, and one goaltender. By region, the Raiders selected five players from Manitoba, four players from Saskatchewan, two from B.C., and one each from Alberta and Texas.

The Raiders originally had the 10th overall pick but traded down to the Seattle Thunderbirds and received the 15th, 60th and 126th overall picks in return. All the picks involved in the trade were for the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Raiders then kicked off their draft by picking 2007-born forward Luke Moroz from the Balgonie Prairie Storm at 15th overall. Moroz led the Saskatchewan U15 AA Hockey League with 108 points and 61 assists in 27 games, while also adding 47 goals. Moroz also scored 15 goals and 27 points in seven playoff games for the Storm.

In the second round, the Raiders followed up with defenceman Ryan Gower from McCreary, Man., with the 32nd overall pick. Gower had 13 goals and 34 points in 32 games with the Parkland Rangers.

Oli Chenier went to the Raiders in the third round, 60th overall. Built like a fire hydrant at 5’8, 192 pounds, Chenier scored 30 goals and 52 points in 27 games with his hometown Winnipeg U15 Wild Gold. Chenier led the team in points and was tied for his team lead in power play goals with eight.

Then four picks later, the Raiders chose a very familiar face in Dayce Derkatch. Dayce is the son of former Raiders director of player personnel Dale Derkatch. Dayce had 31 goals and 84 points in 31 games for the Regina Aces in Saskatchewan U15 AA Hockey League.

The Raiders then found a defenceman who can shoot and score in the fourth round. They selected Jaxon Herchak 76th overall, who led all Saskatchewan U15 AA Hockey League defencemen with 24 goals. He also led his Warman Wildcats in goals, as well.

Centreman Liam Bursaw went to the Raiders in the fifth round, 98th overall. Bursaw had 16 goals and 35 points in 26 games for the Northern Alberta U15 Xtreme.

The Raiders had another two selections in the sixth round, picking a pair of Rink Hockey Academy products. With the 120th selection, the Raiders took Ethan Bibeau from Winnipeg’s Rink Hockey Academy. The 5’10, 149 pound centreman had 12 goals and 36 points in 30 games. Then six picks later, the Raiders drafted Brooks, Alta.’s Noah Smith from Kelowna’s RHA. Smith had a goal and 12 points in 26 games.

Will Shepard from the Delta Hockey Academy was selected in the seventh round. West Vancouver’s Shepard had four goals and 15 points in 17 games for Delta’s U15 Green squad.

Winnipeg’s Mikey Thomas went to the Raiders in the eighth. Thomas had 27 goals and 63 points in 30 games for the Winnipeg Bruins Gold.

It took the Raiders until the 10th round to select a goaltender. They picked Cooper Anderson, a 6’1.5, 184 pound goaltender from Sidney B.C., who played with U18 Tier 2 hockey with the Peninsula Eagles.

The Raiders picked Hubert Clarke 230th overall. Clarke is a defenceman, who played four games of U17 AAA hockey with the Winnipeg Thrashers.

And in the 12th round, the Raiders went all the way down south to Houston, Texas to select forward Braden Bogardus. Bogardus had eight goals and 20 points in 19 games with the 14U AA Houston Wild.
