Edmonton, AB – The Prince Albert Raiders (11-11-4-1) lost the final game of their Central Division road trip 4-1 to the Edmonton Oil Kings (6-18-2-0) on Saturday night at Rogers Place, snapping a four-game point streak.
It was Teddy Bear Toss Night for the Oil Kings and they didn’t keep their fans waiting. Davis Koch scored 1:07 into the game to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead and send more than 14,000 bears onto the ice at Rogers Place.
After the cleanup, the Raiders thought they tied the game on a mid-period power play. Jordy Stallard’s shot beat Travis Child through a Parker Kelly screen, but Kelly was called for goaltender interference and the goal was disallowed. Three minutes later, Stallard scored a goal that counted, working from the corner and backhanding the puck through Child to make it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes.
The Oil Kings took control in the second period. Brett Kemp took advantage of a Raiders’ line change and beat Ian Scott on a wraparound attempt at the 7:13 mark of the frame. Late in the period, Edmonton extended its lead to 3-1 when Koch’s second goal of the game squeaked through Scott. That goal ended Scott’s period. Curtis Meger played the final 2:39 of the middle frame, stopping the only shot he faced.
In the third, Scott returned to the goal, but the Raiders kept the play mostly in the Oil Kings’ end. The Raiders outshot the Oil Kings 18-3 in the final period, but Child stopped all of the shots fired his way to seal the game for Edmonton. Kobe Mohr added an empty-net goal to round out the scoring at 4-1.
Scott finished the games with 19 saves on 22 attempts. Child, buoyed by an 18-save third period, stopped 31 shots to earn the win.
Also, defenceman Kaiden Guhle, the first overall pick in this past May’s WHL Bantam Draft, made his WHL debut on Saturday night. The Sherwood Park, AB product was held off the scoresheet.
Up next for the Raiders is a trip to Swift Current on Tuesday night to take on the Broncos (19-6-2-0). Game time is 7 p.m. at the Credit Union i-Plex.
