Raiders Tame Tigers In Overtime

Medicine Hat, AB – The Prince Albert Raiders (18-20-6-2) needed overtime on Saturday night, but they were able to take two points from the Medicine Hat Tigers (24-18-5-0) in a 3-2 extra time victory at the Canalta Centre.

Vojtech Budik was the overtime hero for the Raiders on Saturday, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games.

The opening period was scoreless thanks to Ian Scott. The Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick stoned Tigers captain Mark Rassell on a breakaway in the best chance of the frame.

Midway through the second, the Tigers opened the scoring. Rassell deked around the defence and tucked the puck inside the post. It didn’t take long for the Raiders to respond. About 1:30 later, Curtis Miske took a pass from Jordy Stallard off of a faceoff and tapped it past Michael Bullion. Before the end of the period, the Raiders took the lead. Regan Nagy finished off a give-and-go play with Spencer Moe on a late-period power play to make it a 2-1 game.

Early in the third, the Tigers tied the game. Scott was unable to control a rebound and Josh Williams pounced on the loose puck to level the score at 2-2.

The Raiders’ penalty kill, which was strong all night, had its best stand in the third. After Miske was whistled for roughing, the Raiders were called for a bench minor, giving the Tigers a two-man advantage for 1:51. The Raiders were able to kill it off, with Scott making a number of key saves.

That preserved the tie, sending the game to overtime. One minute into the three-on-three period, Budik crept in from the point and buried a pass from Parker Kelly to end the game.

Scott finished the game with 33 saves to pick up his second win in as many nights. Bullion stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The Raiders wrap up their Central Division road trip on Sunday evening in Calgary against the Hitmen (14-26-5-1). Game time is 5 p.m. CST. The next Raiders’ home game is on Friday, January 26 against the Prince George Cougars. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at raiderhockey.com.
