Raiders Take Point From Swift Current In OT Loss
David Zammit

Swift Current, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders (11-11-5-1) earned a point in a 5-4 overtime loss against the Swift Current Broncos (20-6-2-0) at the Credit Union i-Plex on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night’s game ended a stretch of 12 of 13 games on the road for the Raiders. Prince Albert finished those road games with a 4-5-2-0 record.

Early in the game, Swift Current opened the scoring. WHL scoring leader Aleksi Heponiemi scored his 19th goal of the year at the 3:31 mark. Less than a minute later, Sean Montgomery wired a shot past Joel Hofer to make it a 1-1 game.

However just before the media timeout, Connor Horning’s shot from the point got through traffic in front of the net and Curtis Meger to put the Broncos ahead 2-1 at the end of the first.

The Raiders jumped out to a 3-2 lead with two quick goals in the second. At the 1:29 mark, Jordy Stallard took a pass from Cole Fonstad and snapped a shot past Hofer.

Just more than a minute later, Curtis Miske broke up a pass in the defensive zone and beat Hofer through the five hole on a breakaway.

That lead held until there were 10 seconds left in the frame. Sahvan Khaira walked in from the blue line and scored on a wrist shot, making it a 3-3 game after two.

In the third, Brayden Pachal scored his first goal of the season when his shot solved Hofer with 9:25 to play.

About three minutes later, the Broncos tied the game again. Glenn Gawdin was left alone in front of the goal and buried a pass from Matteo Gennaro to tie the game at 4-4. The Raiders killed off a late Broncos power play, sending the game to overtime.

The teams traded chances in the extra frame, but the Broncos got the winner. Artyom Minulin took a cross-ice pass from Gawdin and beat Meger to end the game with 1:16 to play in overtime.

Meger made 44 saves in a losing effort for the Raiders, his fourth overtime loss of the season. Hofer stopped 35 shots to earn his third win of the year.

The Raiders return to the Art Hauser Centre for two games this week. Up first is the Medicine Hat Tigers tomorrow night on Lung All-Stars Night. Then on Friday, the Raiders take on the Kamloops Blazers on the Canadian Tire Teddy Bear Toss night. Both games begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at raiderhockey.com, the Raider Office, or by calling 306-764-5348.
