Raiders Edged By Blades In Saskatoon
Saskatoon, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders (12-12-5-2) had the chances late, but Alec Zawatksy’s goal early in the third period gave the Saskatoon Blades (12-16-2-1) a 3-2 win at the SaskTel Centre on Sunday afternoon.
The Blades got on the board early in the first, getting their Teddy Bear Toss out of the way. Cameron Hebig scored his 24th goal of the year at the 4:58 mark of the first. Late in the period, Justin Nachbaur had a great chance in front, but Nolan Maier slid across to deny the backhand.
In the second, the Raiders tied the game at the 3:48 mark. Jordy Stallard picked the corner from the left wing on the power play for his 23rd goal of the year and ninth with the man advantage, tying the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Bradly Goenthals was sprung on a breakaway and tucked it past Ian Scott on a second effort. Before the end of the period, the Raiders re-tied the game. With three Raiders around the crease, Curtis Miske banged home a loose puck for his 10th goal of the campaign.
The Blades took the lead again at the 5:04 mark of the third period. Alec Zawatsky worked around a pick and beat Scott glove side to give Saskatoon a 3-2 lead.
The Raiders had their chances to tie the game in the third period, including 1:23 of 5-on-3 time. In the dying seconds with the extra attacker, a rebound bounced over both Cole Fonstad and Parker Kelly’s stick shortly before time expired on the Raiders’ comeback hopes.
In a losing effort, Scott stopped 22 shots. Maier made 34 saves in the win for the Raiders, including all 11 in the final period.
