Raiders Bounce Back With Win Over Wheaties

Prince Albert, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders (23-23-9-2) got back in the win column on Friday night, knocking off the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 5-2 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Raiders. Coupled with the Saskatoon’s loss to Lethbridge, the Raiders are four points back of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with two games at hand.

The Raiders opened the scoring early in the first period. Brett Leason scored his 10th of the season when he pounced on a rebound around the crease at the 2:04 mark. About five minutes later, Jordy Stallard deked into the slot and fed Regan Nagy with a cross-crease pass and the overager from Ogema made no mistake to make it a 2-0 game.

Late in the first, Brandon (30-22-3-2) cut the lead in half. Schael Higson’s tip on Gunnar Wegleitner’s pass caught Curtis Meger going the other way, making it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Following a scoreless second period, Zack Hayes restored the Raiders’ two-goal advantage in the third. His bullet from the faceoff circle beat Logan Thompson at the 3:01 mark. Just 23 seconds later, Ty Lewis scored for Brandon to bring the Wheat Kings back within one.

It was as close as the visitors got on the evening. Vojtech Budik corralled a loose puck along the boards and blasted a shot past Thompson to give the Raiders a 4-2 advantage at the 6:54 mark. Then with 4:16 to play, Parker Kelly drew the focus of Thompson on a two-on-one rush. At the last moment, Kelly slid it over to McDonald, who tapped it into the empty cage to round out the scoring at 5-2.

Meger earned his first win since January 13 by stopping 18 Brandon shots. Thompson made 34 saves in a losing effort.

It’s a quick turnaround for both teams as they’ll close out the home-and-home series on Saturday night in Brandon at the newly renamed Westoba Place.

The Raiders are back at the Art Hauser Centre on Monday afternoon for their annual Family Day Game at 4 p.m. This time, the Regina Pats make the trip up to Prince Albert for the Monday contest. All of the details are available here. Tickets are available online, or at the box office on Monday starting at 10 a.m.
