Raiders Taking On Rebels in Round One of 2019 WHL Playoffs

Prince Albert, SK – After being the first team in the WHL to clinch a spot in the postseason, the Prince Albert Raiders now know their opponent in Round One of the 2019 WHL Playoffs.

The Raiders (53-10-2-2) will take on the Red Deer Rebels (33-28-4-2) in the first round of the 2019 WHL Playoffs. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series will be on Friday, March 22 at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is 7 p.m.

The Raiders won three of the four games against the Rebels this season including both games at the Art Hauser Centre. Brett Leason led the season series with six points (three goals, three assists). Brandon Hagel (two goals, one assist) and Chris Douglas (one goal, two assists) each and three points for Red Deer.

In the first meeting of the year, Reese Johnson scored for the Rebels with 2:16 to go to hand the Raiders a 4-3 loss on Oct. 6 in Red Deer. It was the Raiders’ first loss of the season at the time. Leason had a goal and an assist to lead the Raiders in scoring. Ian Scott was handed the loss with 17 saves. Ethan Anders kept the Raiders at bay by stopping 49 shots.

A week later, the two teams met again in Prince Albert and the Raiders edged the Rebels 2-1 on Oct. 13. Leason found the back of the net five minutes into the third period to put the Raiders ahead for good in the game. He also had an assist. Scott made 28 saves for the win, while Anders stopped 25 shots in the loss.

The Raiders earned a 4-3 win over the Rebels on Nov. 27 at the ENMAX Centrium. Sergei Sapego factored into the game with three assists. Leason, Cole Fonstad, Parker Kelly, and Spencer Moe were the Raiders’ goal scorers. Scott stopped 28 shots for the win. Byron Fancy made his first appearance against the Raiders in relief. He made 17 saves and was saddled with the loss.

The season series wrapped up on March 1 at the Art Hauser Centre with a 2-1 shootout victory for the Raiders. Noah Gregor scored the Raiders’ goal in regulation and tallied the game-winner in the shootout. Scott made 23 saves for the win. Anders stopped 39 shots for the Rebels.
