Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that 2019 NHL Draft prospect and Prince Albert Raiders forward Brett Leason has been named the WHL McSweeney’s Player of the Month for November 2018.
Leason was tied for the scoring lead in the month of November, posting 24 points (11G-13A), extending his point streak to 26 games by the end of the month as the Raiders remained the top team in the WHL and the entire Canadian Hockey League with a 26-1-0-0 record.
Still leading the WHL in scoring, Leason’s month featured seven multi-points performances including two four-point games, three three-point games, and two two-point games. He also had three multi-goal games, including his first career WHL hat trick on Tuesday, November 20 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Earlier this month, Leason was recognized as the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending November 25, 2018. Overall, Leason posted 15 even-strength points, five power-play points and four-short-handed points.
The 6-foot-4, 199-pound product of Calgary, Alta. was named as the first star of the game on four separate occasions while earning a third star of the game honour once. He was twice named the WHL’s first star of the night and once as the third star of the night in the league.
Through 27 games this season, Leason has 60 points (27G-33A), leading the league in both goals and points. He also leads the WHL with five short-handed goals as part of a Raiders team that leads the WHL with 15 short-handed markers.
Monday, the 19-year-old was one of seven WHL players named to Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp roster in preparation for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. NHL Central Scouting also recognized Leason’s hot start as the forward earned a ‘C’ rating on their ‘Players to Watch’ List ahead of the 2019 NHL Draft.
Leason was originally selected in the third round, 50th overall, by the Tri-City Americans in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. In 162 WHL regular season games, Leason has 111 points (51G-60A), including seven power-play goals, eight short-handed goals, and 10 game-winning goals.
The Raiders are back in action tonight on the road against the Swift Current Broncos. They return home on Saturday night to take on the Brandon Wheat Kings.
